SALE Awesome and Impressive 175 Yr Old Flow Blue Nearly 16'' Long Ironstone Platter ~ Decorated with Pagoda, Bridge, Trees and Flowers ~ Podmore Walker & Co Tunstall England 1834-1859 (Predecessor to Wedgwood & Co.)
Note: Pictures are not blured, this is the heavy flow blue affect when produced. This platter is unbelievable the luster is supreme almost like new. The deep cobalt blue flows out from the designs onto a creamy gray background. The blue against the background gives this piece a great amount of depth. The platter is rectangular in shape but has flat corners making it eight sided. The main design done in a wonderful deep, rich cobalt blue is two pagodas connected with a walking bridge. A large tree is on one side of the bridge and has its branches hanging over the bridge and other pagoda. Small deep cobalt blue trees and landscapes are interspersed around the main pagoda and bridge motif. A geometric design is on the sides leading down into the well. The curved rim of the platter has a floral design. In the four corners there is a pagoda and tree scene. This pattern is in Mary Gaston's book “The Collectors Encyclopedia of Flow Blue China” and it states early flow blue was very dark through time lighter shades where made. This old girl has a small rub on the rim and a 3” hairline, barely noticeable and from a distance is not seen. IT IS RARE TO FIND Ironstone Pieces IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
Podmore Walker & Co: G. Podmore, Walker & Co. took over the Unicorn Pottery and Pinnox Works in Tunstall in 1834. Sometime later they occupied Swan Bank Pottery, vacated by Ralph Hall in 1849. They are listed by Ward in 1843 as having two factories, Newfield and Tunstall. The initials P. W. & Co. appear on several printed marks. In 1859 firm became Wedgwood & Co. when Enoch Wedgwood succeeded the older partnership. Enoch Wedgwood had been a partner in the original firm from about 1856.
