The Japanese Aesthetic movement embodied the Asian influence of art incorporated into jewelry. A mid and later 19th century motif for jewelry, it paid homage to the centuries old Japanese ability to capture a moment in time in nature.
Here a crane and its flock hover above a water scene. The sun is rising over what may be Mt. Fuji, the butterfly alights upon a reed as a snail inches its way across the sand. Rendered in mixed rose and yellow gold metal within cobalt blue and ink black enamel, this is a testament to the skill and creativity of the 19th century jeweler.
The pendant is 18k - 19K yellow gold with beaded gold border and twisted wire work accent with the enamel set into a plain bezel.
Measurements: 1-5/8 inches (4.2 cm) in length by 1-1/4 inches (3.2 cm) in width. This antique pendant has a weight of 13 grams (8.4 dwt).
Condition: Very good; two minute areas where twisted wire is not perfect.
Date: Circa 1860
