Maker & Age: Roseville Pottery Company; early 1900s

Details: Here is a hard to find early Roseville figural pig/piggy bank featuring a glossy mottled Rockingham/Bennington brown and creamy-tan glaze. These figural piggy banks made in the early 1900s were among the first recorded items Roseville manufactured, besides tile and stoneware. Extra special is the embossed "Razor Back" mark on both sides of the pig's back.

The clay of these early Roseville banks is quite light in color compared to the later pottery-ware using yellowish clays that we are more familiar with. There was, however, apparently a lot of experimentation as the color can be quite variable. This bank also demonstrates the main characteristic one can use to distinguish the Roseville pig banks from the McCoy versions. The face of the Roseville pigs is relatively long and narrow as opposed to the rounder, more flat face and larger diameter nose of the McCoy pigs.

Very few of these remain after 100 years, let alone in outstanding condition, and they are rarely seen for sale as the few remaining are already in the hands of discriminating Roseville collectors.

Dimensions: 6" long X 3.5" high X 2.75" wide

Condition: Excellent -- remarkably no chips, cracks or other damage; possibly a salesman sample from a canvassing kit that was carried from household to household for potential customers to view, but never actually used by a small child, the source of most damage to these banks.

Shipping: The bank will be shipped via USPS Priority mail with insurance. Check below the picture for the domestic shipping charge. International customers, please inquire about availability and cost of insured shipping to your location.
