EXTREMELY RARE GEORGE LEYKAUF MASTERPIECE.
'STILL LIFE of the ORIENTAL PED POPPY'. This is plate number eleven of an exceedingly rare ENTIRE MATCHING SET OF 12 FLORAL ART PLATES, created by old master porcelain artist and art professor: GEORGE FERDINAND GUSTAVE LEYKAUF, whose lifetime spanned the years 1860 - 1922. He was a very highly esteemed porcelain painter and watercolor artist, whose classes were sought by art students from all over the world. This is a masterful original china painting upon an ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED LIMOGES FLORAL FINE ART CAKE PLATE, HANDLED CHARGER or PLAQUE: an exceedingly rare museum quality fine art discovery, completely and expertly handpainted by GEORGE LEYKAUF. This porcelain art masterpiece was painted by one of the great artistic geniuses and Old Masters of china painting. This painter was a famous American art professor of the porcelain art form during the Late 19th Century and Early 20th Century. Leykauf was one of the greatest floral art old masters and teachers who ranks among a very select group of highly collectible floral artists such as: Franz Bischoff, Franz Aulich, Paul de Longpre, Catherine Kline and Jean Sadler. Leykauf's 'STILL LIFE of ORIENTAL RED POPPIES' is a creme de la creme art treasure for the connoisseur collector or admirer of rare old masters' porcelain art works. Please note a wonderfully informative art book recently offered by 'The Rosenquist Collection' entitled: 'LEYKAUF', which is a biography of this great artist's life and work. It may be found by keyword searching our collection for: LEYKAUF and several pages from this book are shown in the accompanying photos. This listing is for LEYKAUF PLATE # 11 only, of an entire matching SET OF 12 Leykauf floral art plates, which Leykauf created c.1909. Each plate is available separately through The Rosenquist Collection, or the entire 12-piece Leykauf set may be purchased in portions, or as an entire set.
The genius of master porcelain artist George Leykauf transforms this beautiful Limoges cake plate mold into a gently elegant, exquisite work of art. A unique Leykauf design feature is seen upon this masterpiece, with one gold handle and one white handle, this cake plate closely resembles another T&V Limoges cake plate of similar design featured the "Leykauf" book seen here, for comparison, in an attached photo from the book. The edge is rimmed in gold, Leykauf's signature elaborate scrollwork and crosshatching forming a delicate frame. Arching gracefully across the upper portion of this plate is a beautiful spray of rich colored Oriental red poppies with exceptional shading shown in the petals, creating a sheerness and a wonderful play of light. The center highlights of the blooms are created with tiny dots of black, bringing the flowers to the foreground against foliage of sage green and 'shadow leaves' of silver blue gray, blending with blushes of russet and mauve and lavender. Unopened poppy pods sway on delicate stems, waiting their turn to open against a creamy white background. This poppies painting is absolute perfection by a master Victorian and Edwardian Era porcelain artist. The brilliance of composition and palette cannot be overstated. This museum quality piece, as with any work by this great master, represents a rare pinnacle of antique hand painted porcelain artistry.

'WHAT IS LIMOGES?' The Rosenquist Collection is often asked this question by visitors who are yet unfamiliar with this beautiful old artform upon vintage French porcelain. Over the last several generations, exquisitely hand painted porcelains became a somewhat forgotten artform, which is now gaining a world-wide appreciative audience once again, and is becoming very highly collectible as an arts & collectibles investment. The key to investment success, and also to acquiring the most beautiful collection, is to only invest in the very highest quality of artwork available, and to avoid anything less. This, in the long run, will give the greatest return on investment, as is true with all art and antiques investments. Inferior quality investments may cost less, but they always appreciate much less as well. With this in mind, interesting educational information regarding the DEFINITION OF LIMOGES, etc., may be found by performing an internet search engine keyword search of the following words: WIKI or WIKIPEDIA LIMOGES PORCELAIN. Additional internet information regarding COLLECTING antique hand painted Limoges china art may also be found by keyword searching the following words on any internet search engine: PAMELA WIGGINS LEARNING ABOUT LIMOGES. The Rosenquist Collection recommends researching both of these world wide web internet resources which have varied and interesting information for collectors and investors in this beautiful antique artform. We hope this additional information may help new collectors and art investors make informed decisions when selecting and investing in the very finest examples of vintage Limoges Porcelain Art.
