LARGE OVAL PORCELAIN BROOCH PIN MEDALLION measures 2-1/2" x 2". (This piece is easily adaptable for use as a pendant w jeweler's addition of a brass ring to hang from necklace as a pendant )
The perfectly coordinating ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED HAVILAND LIMOGES VIOLETS PIN PLATE, DISH or BROOCH TRAY for Vanity or Dresser, is in excellent condition and measures 6-1/8" DIAMETER and bears an Elite Limoges France underglaze stamp. (Note: We believe this brooch pin to be of Limoges France origin, but we have not removed it from it's antique brass back clasp to determine if it has a Limoges backstamp. We are unwilling to remove the backplate, as doing so may damage the fragile claw-like metal clasps, called BEZELS, which secure the porcelain medallion in its setting. Nevertheless, we believe experienced and knowledgable Art-Porcelain collectors will readily recognize this pin to be of either antique Limoges, or Bavarian origin. The porcelain is defintely European in origin and is at least 100 years old, and the American china painted handpainting upon it dates back a century or more to the Late Victorian Art Nouveau Period, or Early 20th Century Edwardian Beaux Arts Era of American miniature paintings upon porcelain jewelry.
THE HISTORIC MEANING OF VIOLETS WAS FAITHFULNESS. From medieval times, and through the 16th, 17th, 18th ,19th and early 20th Centuries, different flowers were given different, somewhat secretive, meanings. When a floral bouquet of a particular type of flower (whether real or hand painted flowers) was presented to someone as a gift, in the most subtly romantic way the flower itself expressed, 'without words, the giver's unspoken sentiment. It is amazing to learn that hundreds of heirloom flower types were given very specific meanings, which even varied by the color of the flower! Such gifts of flowers were often used by our ancestors to silently convey their deepest thoughts, perhaps even more expressively and eloquently than what could be easily conveyed with words alone. For instance, VIOLETS, the floral subject of this handpainting, were the Victorians' symbol for FAITHFULNESS. With this delightful LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS concept in mind, a wide variety of florals were china painted by 19th Century porcelain artists, often to be given as artfully handmade gifts to loved ones or friends, with the giver's 'unspoken' sentiment or gesture contained hidden within the message of the flower itself. What a wonderful age old tradition for us in the 21st Century to learn and remember and to continue, as we contemplate truly unusual and special gifts to give to those we love, which are not mass produced, nor commonly available through mail order catalogs. Unique gifts of vintage Art-Porcelain, such as this 'one-of-a-kind' china painting, contain silently eloquent expressions and sentiments from the past and, as collectibles with antique value, will appreciate for the recipient as the years go by.
WHAT IS LIMOGES? The Rosenquist Collection is often asked this question by visitors who are yet unfamiliar with this beautiful old artform upon vintage French porcelain. Over the last several generations, exquisitely hand painted porcelains became a somewhat forgotten artform, which is now gaining a world-wide appreciative audience once again, and is becoming very highly collectible as an arts & antiques investment. The key to investment success, and also to acquiring the most beautiful collection, is to only invest in the very highest quality of artwork available, and to avoid anything less. This, in the long run, will give the greatest return on investment, as is true with all art and collectibles investments. Inferior quality investments may cost less, but they always appreciate much less as well.
