About Us
'OUR HISTORY': (also see 'OUR SPECIALTY' far below)
'The Rosenquist Collection' is part of our Swedish family heritage. The Old World Swedish name 'Rosenquist' beautifully translates to: 'Branches of Roses'. 'The Rosenquist Collection', in its entirety, consists of thousands of individual pieces of magnificent hand painted original art upon antique porcelain, many of which will be presented on Ruby Lane over the next years. 'The Rosenquist Collection' actually began in the late 1800s when our Great-Grandmother Rosenquist arrived in New York City via steam ship from Goteborg, Sweden. (Note: we occasionally feature an 1895 photograph of her when she was very young, in our shop's logo) There, in the height of Victorian America, she took up the art of china painting which was spreading like wildfire through New York society, and later across the country. This high-society art form of china painting flourished from the 1890s until the end of World War I, when imported Limoges, Haviland and Bavarian unpainted whiteware blanks became nearly impossible for American china artists to acquire. Once these imports ceased, due to World War I factory bombings, this unique American art form vanished as quickly as it had blossomed. The 1890-1920 china painting movement was truly a unique event in world art history ~ when an entire populace, for one very short period (about 30 years), took up art as a national pastime. China artists of the elite gentrified class studied with famous, highly paid art teachers, such as Franz Bischoff, Franz Aulich and George Leykauf, and later Jean Sadler who were treated as celebrities. Artists gathered weekly to 'china paint' in small groups all across America. 'The Rosenquist Collection' contains some of the finest examples of hand painted porcelain art ever created during that very brief period. This phenomenon really only occurred in America, and not to any great extent in Europe ~ except as produced in the wonderful professional art studios of Limoges, France and a few neighboring countries. After this 1890-1920 American Victorian and Edwardian art form faded, it did not resurface as an active American art movement until a revival of china painting in the 1950s was spearheaded by such notable 20th Century porcelain artists as the inimitable Jean Sadler ~ renowned for her exquisite china paintings of Roses. In addition to Great-Grandmother Rosenquist's personal china paintings, she began, in the late 1890s, to acquire the works of other very talented porcelain artists of her time, which over the years grew into a vast private art collection she referred to as: 'The Rosenquist Collection'. Our own interest in collecting beautiful antique hand painted porcelain art began when we inherited her estate's art collection. Since then, we have enjoyed studying the history of this fascinating art form, searching for and carefully evaluating art and adding our own art selections to hers. So the present 'Rosenquist Collection' is a combination of both her own incredible collecting efforts over the last 110 years, as well as our own personal collecting efforts which continue to this day. We are now, for the first time in our 'Collection's' long history, offering select pieces for purchase to discriminating art collectors and admirers. We have been told by experts in the field that 'The Rosenquist Collection' is one of the finest assemblages of antique hand painted porcelain art of its kind. Hopefully, you may agree and will share with us the excitement of discovering and contemplating such beautiful works of art as presented here. Most of these heirlooms are truly 'one-of-a-kind' art treasures, seldom seen before and, once sold, they may not be seen again for another 100 years ~ as they enter into other private art collections. Many are true masterpieces hand painted by the Old Masters of this forgotten art form, collectively called: Art-Porcelain. We hope to soon consolidate photos of many of these pieces into a Collectors' reference book, where the focus will be on the artists and on very high art quality, rather than primarily on the porcelain manufacturers and backstamp marks. (Thus we reserve all present and future copyright privileges to publish photos of the items we present here after these items are sold). Some of the artists' names, works and magnificent talents you will discover within 'The Rosenquist Collection' have remained unseen in a public forum for the last century. We hope you will enjoy rediscovering their collective genius, and selecting very special pieces to add to your own private art collections and homes. Please feel free to contact us via email if we can help you in any way with questions about our pieces, or regarding the history of china painting in general.
And please know, if you discover a very special piece which is somewhat beyond your current budget, please feel free to ask us either about our 20% Down Monthly Installment Layaway Plans or, alternatively, for our very best price if paid-in full at time of purchase on a particular item, as we can sometimes do better. Our margins vary considerably from piece to piece, but we will try to help your 'Wish List' items come true, when we are able to. Each Art-Porcelain investment purchased from 'The Rosenquist Collection' comes with a signed 'Certificate of Provenance' with photograph and with descriptive information about the piece for its new owners to keep with their heirloom as a record to pass along to future generations of owners. Thank you so much for your very kind interest in our 'Collection', and for your patronage.
With Kindest Regards,
The Rosenquist Collection ®

LETTERS RECEIVED FROM CUSTOMERS & VIEWERS of 'THE ROSENQUIST COLLECTION':
Message received from one of the world's greatest living porcelain artists:
"When I discovered your website, I broke down in tears when I first saw all the workmanship and I cannot touch it and see the magnitude of the brush work...You're such exceptional people to have seen all this and to have it in your souls. You're like One of the 'old ones'...not only are you unique but a master of seeing beauty. You may not paint but your eye goes far beyond that. For the first time I can understand why critics don't have to feel the brush but just understand the outcome of it. People like you I think see more than an artist does of his own work. I envy you for having the knowledge in front of you of many a past artist's lifetime. I can only see this on a computer screen and am so moved..you're living with the art of all the greatest porcelain artists of the past... What a joy, What a joy! I'm going to bed now and think not only about the beauty that surrounds you daily, but also what I have missed. I am very proud to say I know you both... You're special people."
John Bergman, Artist of North Dakota

To Ruby Lane Customer Service:
"As I am sure you know, Antiques & Fine Arts are a tough business to be in nowadays. With so many different outlets, virtually at ones fingertips, it seems only the strong survive. It's a dog eat dog world. One has to have a niche, a true knowledge & understanding of what they are selling to get ahead and be successful. I do believe, with all of my heart, that shop owners: The Rosenquist Collection, have what it takes!
Mr. & Mrs. Rosenquist are not only knowledgeable but they are true professionals, inside & out. They are courteous, friendly, willing to do whatever it takes to satisfy their customers. They pay close attention to fine detail. Their listings are packed with information on the item they are describing as well as super size photos. The written info is especially important to me as I am legally blind & what I am able to see from a photo is limited. I have actually LEARNED things from their listings about porcelain that I never knew before reading what they so lovingly share within their descriptions. I applaud them. This type of service and information takes time to compile. Time ~ something none of us seem to have enough of these days. They MAKE the time. They KNOW this information means something to their customers. They encourage & invite their customers to ask questions & they actually take the time to answer those questions with more than a two sentence reply. It just seems to me so many people in business today have lost that personal touch that customers LOVE. It makes a huge difference. The Rosenquist Collection has NOT lost their touch. I truly feel this shop should be recognized for the SUPREME Service, Knowledge & the Personal Attention they give to each & every one of their potential customers. They just don't make them like this any more. Its an absolute PLEASURE doing business with them & in my opinion, you are very lucky to have them representing Ruby Lane.
Sincerely,
Nancy" of Connecticut

I want Ruby Lane to know how satisfied I was throughout the entire transaction. The owners are unequalled when it comes to customer service. They definitely deserve to be recognized by Ruby Lane as caring, professional business people. I look forward to doing business with them again. These owners are an absolute pleasure to do business with and I wish there were more people like them. The items I purchased from them were received in perfect condition, wrapped beautifully, with an extra added bonus that being individually wrapped chocolates.

Dear Rosenquists: While we have never met personally, I believe that we both have a great attention to detail in just about everything that we do, and that equals excellent customer service. From your excellent communications, precise packaging, all the way down to the wrapped morsels.....Your thoughtfulness is only matched and surpassed by that of my mother. You are truly professionals in every sense of the word. I don't often offer such glowing remarks regarding a shipped item, but your handling of this transaction was 'above and beyond' any normal expectation and hopefully we'll do business again.

Message from Finland to The Rosenquist Collection:
"Hi! Thank you for writing such a kind reply. During the long dark Finnish winter, I spent hours researching the few plates in my collection and sometimes read the descriptions in your shop because they are so interesting. Anyone can look up a mold or porcelain mark in a book to find the age or manufacturer of a piece, but I find your descriptions of the artwork absolutely fascinating. The way you write about the beauty of each plate allows a layperson such as myself to see the how the composition and colors created by the artist bring the plate alive. Thanks to you, I've learned to appreciate my plates in a new light. Your skillful writing reminds me of the way my professor would talk about various pieces in a course on Japanese Art History back in my university days.
While there are many books on fine porcelain, they are mostly factual and for the purposes of identification. Since you have such an amazing collection, have you considered publishing a picture book for the sake of art alone? Or perhaps, you have already done so? Each page you have on Ruby Lane, with the exceptionally fine photography and informative yet delightful description of each plate, would make a very nice page in a book. There must be quite a few people like myself who appreciate having a few fine plates and yet harbour an endless curiosity about what else is out there in the world of Limoges. An appreciation book would be different from the rest - sort of like the beautiful horses of the world, which featured photography of fine steeds just for sake of their beauty alone.
By reading your listings, I've developed a greater appreciation for the artwork itself. Previously, I never viewed a handpainted plate like one might view an oil painting, but now I can see how there really isn't any difference if the artwork is equal in quality.
You have so many lovely items and I was just astounded when you mentioned that there are still several thousand more which remain in your private art collection. That is a lifetime endeavor, so I think you must really love fine porcelain. In closing, I appreciate your kind reply.
With best regards,
Marti " of Finland

"Thanks so much for the kind words. I have been very lucky in the past to have much of my collection featured in 3 Limoges Books.. Hopefully all that hard work of having my collection in books helps someone..There is such a wide variety of pieces and quality of painting is so important.. You have some of the finer pieces I have seen in a long time, and the way you display them is outstanding... very well done...I will be watching for more of your beautiful items to arrive..
Have a wonderful day.. Bruce

"Hello, How happy I am to have discovered your website on Ruby Lane. As is so for all great pieces of art, it is not easy to find the words to describe the beauty of the pieces from THE ROSENQUIST COLLECTION, but I know I need not tell you this. It is a pleasure to see these exquisite examples of beautiful porcelain. They take my breath away. As I am also of Swedish descent, I derive pleasure from the fact that a Swedish woman, i.e. your Great Grandmother who was a china painter herself, not only created beautiful artwork but also had the foresight to begin acquiring such an extensive collection of the artwork of others, which you have also continued to do.

"Only recently on looking at new arrivals at Ruby Lane I have seen your offerings and they are among the most beautiful pieces I have ever looked at, and I can only imagine the beauty of all you must have. Just looking makes for wonderful dreaming. I truly appreciate beauty of this quality, but wonder oh how can they let it go?"

"Thank you both so much for working out a layaway plan and for working with me! You have been just wonderful! I have begun to fall in love with paintings in your
collection and to become fascinated by 19th century and turn of the century art! While it's appropriate to think of collectibles as investments, every purchase that I've ever made has to speak to me emotionally and draw me in.These two pieces did just that. We are going to treasure them for many years to come! I appreciate your beautiful Rosenquist Collection more than words can say!Thank you for offering these rare one-of-a-kind masterpieces!
Kindest Regards,
