SOLD German Porcelain Plaque Dresden Lace Minstrel With Mandolin
I've always loved this German porcelain plaque, it's a great decorative piece and quite old. The plaque has a round, Rococo shape with scrolls and a minstrel playing a mandolin. The minstrel is applied, so he stands out from the plaque quite a bit. He has porcelain lace on his cuffs, elaborate collar, and coat tails. The lace is dark but has always been this way, due to age. The minstrel is framed with applied, Dresden flowers and leaves. He has always had some crazing around his neck from the manufacturing process when he was put together and applied to the plaque. There is also a manufacturing or annealing crack on the back of the plaque, at the bottom, that extends to the thick side of the plaque. It does not go up onto the front at all and is under the glaze, thus we know it was caused during the firing. The plaque measures 9" tall and 8 1/2" wide. Unmarked, we believe this piece to be Dresden. There is no damage to any of the applied flowers and the gold is excellent. It has two factory drilled holes and a wire for hanging. Circa 1880.
