Beautifully made porcelain sultan smoking opium in a hookah pipe. His mouth is molded as a round hole for the smoke to escape, behind him is the opening for incense. There is no inner liner, this piece most likely had a metal burner originally. The sultan is well detailed, with patterned robes and long, flowing beard. He wears a wrapped turban with a crown. The turban has a molded hole in the back also. His fingers are molded separately and his features are sharp and well defined. He is marked only with a raised star and is of German origin. This piece stands 3 3/4" tall and 3 1/8" wide. He is made of very fine, translucent porcelain and is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or hairlines. Originally there was a tiny metal tray to hold the incense. Circa 1890.
