Of all the well listed, famous Limoges studio artists, A. Rico stands out as the one who perfectly mastered the concept of depth and color. All of the nineteenth century Limoges artists had their favorite "formulas" for mixing colors, but Rico did it best, and while his works are not often found, they are instantly recognizable for his incredible use of the art of light and color. He was not prolific, and his works are scarce to find. Rico has painted this gorgeous plate on a Limoges blank while working for Blakeman & Henderson, a French china art painting studio known for their elaborately decorated porcelain. The plate features a pie-crust scalloped rim with braided, raised detail, heavily gilded with Roman coin gold. Rico has painted a bouquet of French tea roses in pink, lavender, yellow, and white, with deeply shaded leaves and trailing stems. He starts with a rich, deep backround of forest green, shading it into smoldering teal and deep, blushing pink. Rico has proudly signed the front, A. Rico. The plate measures 8 1/2" in diameter, and while it looks perfect, it is not. There are two small chips at the edge of the back, completely unseen when viewing the piece on display. There is no wear to the richly painted gold border. We can assist with restoration of this piece for an additional charge if desired, although since it displays perfectly it is not really necessary. The plate is marked with a Limoges, France factory stamp and also with the studio decorating mark of Blakeman & Henderson. Circa 1900, this is a beautiful, rare gem at a bargain price due to the minor damage to the back.
