Rare to find example of a beautiful Limoges tall pitcher hand painted in the Victorian Japonism style. This dramatic painting by the artist on French porcelain features a pair of colorful swallowtail birds perched on the branches of weeping cherry blossoms. The cherry blossoms are painted all around the piece, making a gorgeous display from any angle. The rim and handle are richly gilded with Roman coin gold and the top portion is painted black and smokey gray and highlighted by deep lavender cherry blossoms. The pitcher stands 10" tall and measures 7" from spout to handle. Marked JPL France, (Jean Pouyat, Limoges, France), this piece dates to circa 1909. Japonism, Japonisme, or Japonesque, is the application of the principles of Japanese art on decorative objects, especially by French artists, starting about 1850 and lasting thru the Art Nouveau period. Examples on porcelain like this striking, dramatic Limoges pitcher are seldom found. The pitcher is also incised 25 on the base, likely denoting the pitcher's capacity. In excellent condition with no damage, and just the slightest bit of wear to the gold on the handle in a few spots.
