What a wonderful old find this was, a ladies sandwich case or canteen used in the foxhunting field and nowadays in the horse show ring. The leather case is in good condition, with all the straps present and accounted for, the stitching tight and secure, with the leather having a lovely patina. Inside it is divided for the sandwich box and a glass flask, which is sadly missing, but replaceable. There is what appears to be ink on the top flap of the inside, perhaps used to obscure a previous owners name. The sandwich box is marked EPBM, for electro plated brittania metal, and has the James Dixon & Sons hallmarks, along with the bugle or trumpet hallmark they were granted in 1879. The double set of hinges on the sandwich box are in excellent order, and the top ring is still attached. The leather case measures 5.5" by 5.25", about 1.25" thick, while the sandwich box is 4.75" by 3" and 1" thick. An outstanding find for the equestrian, from one of Britain's most respected makers, dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period.
