This is certainly a rare and treasured favorite in my library of horse books, Hoofbeats by Warren Halpin, published in 1938. An edition limited to 1550 numbered copies, of which 1500 were for sale, this being #167. The book is divided into three sections, foxhunting, polo and steeplechase, with an introduction to each of those disciplines by a most prominent master in the field, Polo by Stewart B. Iglehart, Steeplechasing by William du Pont, Jr. and Hunting by MFH Henry G. Vaughan. Unpaginated, there are 62 full page black and white illustrations drawn by Halpin. Each illustration consists of three pages, a title page, a page describing the illustration, with its own remarque or vignette, and then the stunning full page illustration. I've given you just a sample of the 62 drawings, others I love are "Old Campaigners" with two pensioners under a tree, "Fifteen Dollars a Day" showing the poor hunter horse for hire, "Great Expectations" a mare and foal grazing peacefully, "A Lady Rides" with an elegant woman side saddle, or aside on her beautifully turned out mount, and "Fox in the Morning." Halpin's depictions of dogs are as wonderful as his horses, the hound packs moving off, the Foxhound puppies meeting a gentle old hunter... A large book, it measures 12" by 9.5" and about 1.5" thick. The cloth cover is done in a tattersal pattern of orange and blue, with some overall soiling and wear to the spine and a bit of foxing to the inside covers. A treat for the eye, I'm so happy to be able to offer one of the 1500 copies to you in my Ruby Lane shop, for you to enjoy as much as I have my copy for all these years.
