A delightful duo from the British firm of Wood and Sons, an alphabet ABC nursery bowl and mug. The bowl has the most adorable little cowboy on a stick horse, wearing his woolly chaps to illustrate "Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross." Measuring 6.5" in diameter, the outer rim has the alphabet done in a brilliant blue. Another scarce and hard to find Johnson Brothers piece from my personal collection, this is a teapot in their "Coaching Scenes" pattern. While the blue "Coaching Scenes" pattern is readily available, the brown is rarely seen, especially in this country. I love these old dishes or bowls that were made by various American companies for feeding the pooch in your life. They date from the 1930's to the 1950's, and they have such naive charm--there is a two page full color spread on them in the book "Living with Dogs." This feeder is done in a deep chocolate brown, a bright and shiny glaze, with raised dogs in grass all around the bowl. A truly delightful covered butter or small cheese dish, made by Portland Pottery, Cobridge in England. The domed lid is charmingly decorated on all four sides, with a fox hunter on his horse taking a fence, foxhound leading the way. The back side shows a fox head and brush--his tail as it is called-set atop a long lashed hunting whip. The handle to the lid is a black hunting cap, a lovely touch.
