Antique & vintage furniture, glassware, primitives, jewelry, clothing and so much more.
She played with them and loved them but now, 60 years later, no longer has the room to store them. Some lucky collector, realizing the value and rarity of this pair being kept together all these years, will be thrilled to add them to their Raggedy Ann and Andy collection.
The world's most famous rag dolls were created by Johnny Gruelle who was born in 1880 and died in 1938. He was a cartoonist, illustrator and author by trade, but it was the stories he told his young daughter that were the beginning of the Raggedy Ann tales. He actually designed and patented the first Raggedy Ann rag doll on September 7, 1915. In 1918 he published his first book about Raggedy Ann, Raggedy Ann Stories.
Andy was created later and the two together exemplified strong characters who were kind, honest, trustworthy and spirited. They came along at a time when the United States was exceedingly troubled by its first World War and an economic depression.
The dolls are in good condition but it is obvious they have been played with. They are 20" long and in their original clothes. Raggedy Ann still has her maker's tag on her side which tells us she was made by the Georgene Novelties, Inc. in 1947. She and Andy both have their original black shoe button eyes and lots of curly red (now faded to orange) yarn hair.
Elastic, which always seems to give out after a few years, is nowhere to be found on these dolls. However, an ingenious little girl figured out how to safety pin everything together so you will find lots of safety pins and even some repairs made with not too perfect stitching. Both dolls say "I LOVE YOU" from the little red hearts stenciled over their hearts.
They are both 20" in length and together weigh 14 oz.
