A superb antique French Napoleon III era gilt bronze jewelry box or casket decorated with ornate neo-classical motifs of foliate, tracery columns and fleur di lys shaped appliqués. At the center lid is a beautifully hand painted Limoges enamel portrait plaque resplendent in bright colors with sections of foil underlying to emphasis texture and crowned by a small green jewel. The portrait is signed with the initials L.C.

The box has a lock with a display key and opens to reveal a salmon-pink velvet like material lining the interior. Stands on four bun feet and is marked “FRANCE”. In very good condition. Comes with a display key.

The box measures 7 ¼” in length, 5 ¾” in width and about 3 ½” in height. Portrait measures about 2 3/8” in diameter.
