A charming antique 19th century French gilt bronze jewelry box decorated with a hand painted miniature ivory portrait. A twisted rope like motif circles the edges of the lid on this serpentine shaped box with ornate scrolling foliate as well as rocailles surrounding a large central miniature portrait. It portrays a beautiful lady, with dusky eyebrows and a rosy complexion, wearing a blue shawl over a white gown crossed by a garland of pink roses and a blue feather plumed embellishment in her hair finishes off the ensemble. Beautifully hand painted with tiny minute brush-strokes and bright, vivid colors all set under a convex glass and signed by the artist Gella or similar.

The lid opens to reveal a light sage green velvet material lining the interior, still in very good condition. A frieze surrounds the sides of the box in a continuous pattern of flowers and laurel leaves.

. The box measures 6 1/8” in length, 4 3/8” in width and about 1 3/8” in height. The portrait measures about 2 3/4” in diameter.

Condition: In very good condition with some dark spots to the metal from age.
