This little guy is probably the oldest and finest of the netsuke collection. The detailed carving and incised work is very well done. His facial expression is priceless. He is one happy dude! You might think he is laughing - not just smiling. Whichever it might be, he is very pleased! He is walking along with a mask and dice (die, really) slung over one shoulder, and a gourd hanging from a rope in his hand. Notice how well carved is his face and teeth. It is in excellent condition and the crack shown in the die just adds character to this charming piece. Ca. 1900. It measures 2 1/4" high. The bottom is carefully carved level enough so he can stand on his own for display purposes. Notice the soles of his shoes! Artist signed as well.
