This is a very cute vintage netsuke. It has a really nice form and feels good in the hand. The pattern on the frogs skin is incised as are the eyes. Artist signed on the base. The base is also carved with the webbed feet of the frog. Very wearable. The color is a dark beige - possibly what they call a "tea stain". It compliments the carving very nicely. This old Chinese cloisonne box dates from at least the 1920s - the height of the "Chinese Export" period. It has an extremely pleasing shape. As you will see from the photos, this little frog has a very compelling countenance! It is a very dark charcoal to black color and is carved out of a very hard substance. Our best guess is that it is of some type of stone. At first thought obsidian but we are under the impression that obsidian is shiney.
