Renaissance style torchlight angels from the J.P. Morgan Estate located in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York (Morgan Island). Morgan was known for his renowned art collection of Medieval and Renaissance art. Much of his collection is preserved in the Morgan Library and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The angels were produced by the Daprato Statuary Company, New York/Chicago. The Daprato Company closed its doors in 1932 during the Depression era. Each angel is clearly marked with a brass plaque indicating the Daprato Company and dated 1915. The angels bodies are made of gesso and plaster. Tne arms are made of die cast metal. The torch is hand-carved wood and brass. I have professionally restored the painting over the plaster, since the original paint was damaged. I was able uncover the original colors underneath several layers of later painting. They have also been electrified at the torches. The arms and face are flesh color, the tunic is white, and the sash is blue. The features of both angels are androgynous, however, the left-handed angel has a right hand pointed upwards indicating a masculine aspect of their angelic nature. The right-handed angel has a left hand facing downward indicating the feminine aspect. The angels are permanently mounted in custom made mahogany bases. They also have custom made dollies, which can be used for display or moving them. In addition, each angel has its own custom built crate with instructions for assembly, packaging and transporting. The angels are virtually life-size standing 72" (from the base to the top of the torch) and having a 38" wingspan. Original documents supporting their authenticity and a portfolio with the history of the J.P. Morgan Estate are included. The pictures do absolutely no justice to these magnificent historical statues. Please contact me with any further questions or for additional photos.
