Sweetpea Cottage is offering this very unusual book, done by the recently deceased artist, Pablita Velarde. This book was a landmark publication when it came out in 1960, because of the beautiful and unique graphics done by Velarde. She was born on the Santa Clara Pueblo in 1918, northwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico. For her time, she was the most noted Indian woman painter in the U.S. Published by Northland Press in Flagstaff, Arizona, the book is in hardcover and a first edition. It measures 9 1/4 by 12 1/4 inches and is in fine condition. There is an impressive inscription inside from the author/artist, signed and dated March 10, 1963. The book contains 66 pages including illustrations, text and index. It is generously illustrated with reproductions of Velarde’s paintings and drawings. The text of the book tells a number of stories, about the Turkey Girl, Long Sash, Sad Eyes, Enchanted Hunter, Butterfly Boy and the First Twins. Included with the book is an advertising piece that relates to its publication. This is a most unusual item, both for the rarity of the piece, the beauty of the drawings, and the personal inscription. Once this piece is gone, it will be hard to find another.
