Sweetpea Cottage is offering a beautiful green-on-black bowl by San Ildefonso artist Than Tsideh, also known as Erik Fender. Tsideh has become a sensation in the community of Native American pottery artists because of his unique style and his development of the green-on-black technique. Tsideh has a history of awards including -1987 New Mexico Congressional Art First Place, -1988 Santa Fe Indian Market First Place, and-1998 Santa Fe Indian Market Honorable Mention. This bowl measures 5 inches tall and 6 ½ inches wide. The bowl carries traditional puebloan pictographic motifs including a basic kiva design, all down in Tsideh’s dusky green glaze. Around the top there is a micaceous glaze that extends down into the interior. The ground is the beautiful gloss black that has become the hallmark of artists such as Maria Martinez. This bowl has proven to be quite a challenge to photograph. The pictures do not adequately pick up the intense gloss black along with the rich green design. Condition is excellent. The shape is fluid and proportionally very pleasing. We were fortunate enough to obtain this wonderful item at a very reasonable price and are passing the savings along to you. Check the records and you will find that Tsideh’s items are quickly rising in price beyond what the average collector can afford.
