Sweetpea Cottage is selling a complete set of Sternauware including a ceramic tray and six coasters. Decorated with a plum and leaf pattern, it is unusual to find a complete set like this. Usually the tray is missing, or some of the coasters are gone. Sternauware such as this dates from about 1890 to 1912. Each piece is signed on the rim with the Sternauware name and the backs of the ceramic inserts are all labeled “Germany” along with a design number “3357". The tray measures 9 ½ inches across and each coaster is 3 inches across. The tray and coasters are surrounded with perforated nickel-silver rims. The set is in great shape, even though one of the coasters is cracked all the way across. Even with the crack, that coaster is still quite useable, if you wish. The underside of the tray has some sort of material that is sticking too it. We can not determine what it is, but it may be remnants of an early surface that it was sitting on and that stuck to it. You can remove it if you choose; we have left it in place as it is historically part of the piece.
