Sweetpea Cottage is offering this marvelous Jugendstil Owl Bell, made by Hugo Berger (Working as Goberg) in Germany during the early 1900's. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. The piece is made from a combination of hand hammered steel and brass. The bell is all brass while the owl perched on top is steel with brass applied eyes and beak. The piece stands 7 3/4 inches tall, is 3/14 inches wide, and 2 1/4 inches deep. The condition is excellent. It has been well treated over the years. There is a small hole in the head of the owl that was probably placed there at the time of manufacture. It is not clear what the purpose of the hole might have been. It is possible to occasionally run into Goberg’s owl motif on match holders, desk paper clips, and a few other items, but we have never seen another bell. No doubt there are some more out there somewhere, but people seem reluctant to part with them. When you see this beauty in person, you will understand why. The charm it exudes is wonderful.
