Sweetpea Cottage is offering for your consideration, this delightful piece of post- World War II folk art from Austria. We are unsure of its purpose but it was clearly intended for serving some items of food. The platter is made out of solid wood, possibly maple or linden, that has been turned on a lathe. It measures approximately 13 3/4 inches across and is about 3/4 of an inch tall. It is basically flat, other that a ½ inch depression in the center and two slightly raised rims. Around the edges there are a series of 6 vignettes of people superimposed over sections of musical notes and song lyrics. Between the vignettes there are grape clusters and grape leaves. The vignettes round the edges and the lines of music are all illustrations and words from various Wienerlieder, or Viennese songs. Some of the vignettes and songs have been identified for us by a Ruby Lane visitor. They are:

1. 'Der alte Herr Kanzleirat'. First published in 1940 and used in the film 'Der Kanzleirat' released in 1948. 2. 'Drunt in der Lobau'. A sentimental ballad about the Lobau, a wooded area to the north of Vienna, first published in 1928. 3. 'Allweil lustig, fesch und munter'. The chorus of a well-known song entitled 'Der Weaner geht nit unter'. 4. 'I bitt her Hauptmann, i bitt' ganz schön'. This is a dance song from the province of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) the province around Vienna. 5. 'Weil I a alter Drahrer bin'. A song composed by Johann Sioly, who composed the music for dozens of well-known Wienerlieder. He died in 1911.

The vignettes might all be hand painted, although it is difficult to tell for sure. Each of the vignettes is separated by a wood-burned, or pyrographic, design. There is some age darkening overall on the piece and some crazing on the vignettes. This crazing is what makes it difficult to decide if the design is hand painted. There is also a chip of wood missing from the outside rim. (Check the photos to see the chip.) The only indication of age is the date “1947" that appears as part of one of the vignettes. While it clearly had an original use as a serving platter of some sort, it would now be terrific hanging as a piece of decorative art on the wall.
