Hand crafted in the woodworking shop at Sweetpea Cottage, this classic bentwood box is a unique item reflecting the simplicity of fine folk art, made in the traditional manner of the Norwegian tines, or tina (pronounced tee-na). It can stand as a piece of art on its own, or it would make an excellent conversation piece, storage box for desk detritus, or jewelry box. Crafted like a piece of fine furniture, this is an elegantly styled bent wood box, with beautiful, graceful lines and rich color. This box has been entirely constructed with Pennsylvania black cherry emphasizing the beautiful grain and color of the wood. It has been steam bent and fastened together with split lacing in the style used by early Norwegian craftsmen. The cherry is a rich reddish-brown, that will continue to darken with age. The corner posts are cut in a linen fold / fiddlehead silhouette that stands out proudly from the lid. The handle on the lid carries the traditional Norwegian arched design with a slight floral element. The lid snaps down tightly onto the corner posts, giving this type of box the nickname “snap box.” It is a beautiful interpretation of the traditional Norwegian, Swedish or Scandinavian, tine.

The box is oval with the storage area measuring about 8 ½ inches long by 5 3/4 inches wide, standing 3 5/8 inches tall. The total length to the ends of the lid is 10 inches and 6 inches to the outside edges of the lid. The total height to the top of the corner posts is 7 inches. The wood has been treated with a oil stain, then finished with several coats of a polyurethane/oil finish. The oil has helped to bring out the richness of the cherry and the wood is developing the classic cherry patina that is so sought after. Finally, it was polished with a very high quality conservator’s wax.
