Sweetpea Cottage is offering this beautiful mid 19th century walnut shaving mirror/comb case, shelf, and cabinet. Judging by the style and construction, including the square nails, we would date this piece to about 1870.

It measures 22 inches high and 11 ˝ inches wide. When hanging on the wall it stands out about 5 3/4 inches. It is constructed entirely of solid walnut and has what appears to be its original mirror. The mirror shows the flaws and silver loss that is associated with age but for security it has been reattached to the piece with new glazing points. There have been a number of repairs over the years. One of the “leaves” at the top broke off an one time and has been replaced with an excellently matching piece. A split runs up the left side of the back, caused most likely be drying and shrinkage of the boards over the years. The right hand candle shelf has been re-glued and there is a modern brad slightly visible from the front used to strengthen its attachment to the piece. The left hand candle shelf has a chip that has been subtly repaired with wood putty that matches very well. All of the construction was done with square brads and glue. The cabinet has a barrel type door that swings open to reveal the storage space. The barrel door is made from a single piece of solid wood that was carefully planed to the appropriate curve. The porcelain knob on the drawer is original. The bottom of the cabinet is made from a rough sawn piece of wood. Since the bottom was never intended to be seen, no attempt was made to finish it. The walnut has developed beautiful color and patina over the years. There is also a topcoat of varnish. The piece seems to be right in all regards, and looks absolutely stunning hanging on a wall.
