19th C. Large Walnut Dovetailed Sliding Lid Candle Box

In keeping with our dedication to finding the unusual wooden antiques, we are offering you this terrific solid walnut, dovetailed candle box with a sliding lid. It is large, measuring 14 inches long, 8 inches wide, and stands 5 inches from the base to the upper surface of the lid. It is heavily constructed, using 5/8 inch boards. The lid is cut as a raised panel with chamfers that sit into grooves for sliding. All four corners are beautifully dovetailed and still show the register marks of the individual who cut them. There are 3 finger grips cut into the lid for aiding in sliding it open and closed. There is one problem area that we have carefully photographed. This appears as a hole cut into the wood just below the sliding lid on the left end. The location of the hole matches a small groove cut into the lid. This makes us suspect that a latch or lock was located in this spot at one time. While the hole is clearly visible, it does not detract from the look of the piece. The bottom of the box is a plank that has been cut and dropped in between the sides. It has then been anchored with 6 square nails. It is in good, solid condition showing wear that is consistent with its use and age. It is quite sound and the lid still slides smoothly in the grooves without the large amounts of play that are usually found in this type of box. The box was refinished at one time. This refinishing appears to have taken place quite a while ago and has now become part of the history of the box. It appears to be surfaced with a layer of varnish. While we can not speak of the origin of the box it was obtained from an estate in Ohio. This is a very stout and well built example of a candle box and will be a wonderful addition to anybody’s antique box collection or make an great decorative statement in your country style home.
