Sweetpea Cottage is offering you the chance to own a remarkable piece of Black Forest carving from the Victorian era. It is amazing both in terms of the execution of the piece and that it has survived so nicely over all of these years.

This one-of-a-kind long-stemmed compote was carved from two pieces of linden, or basswood. The basic shape of the piece was turned on a lathe. After being turned, the details of the design were added by hand. The base is attached to the wooden bowl by wooden threads. It is hard to adequately describe the beautiful, delicate nature of the piece. It is extremely detailed and certainly took much patience and skill to complete. The cutouts on the base and bowl were all done by hand with a scroll saw. Around the base and bowl there are also designs that were added with punches. In many areas it is still possible to see the tooling marks that were left by the maker. The piece stand 8 5/8 inches high. The diameter of the bowl is 8 ½ inches and the base is about 6 1/4 inches wide. The maker applied a thin layer of stain in order to darken the wood to a walnut color. The surface is matte and shows the patina that wood slowly obtains with age. The condition is very good. The piece is sound with no signs of cracks or shrinkage. Many times pieces like this will warp due to shrinkage of the wood. There is no significant warping on this item. There is one area on the lip of the bowl that is approximately 1 inch long where the stain has lifted off. It appears to have come in contact with water, perhaps, and the stain bled off. Even the threaded post is in excellent condition. Usually, wooden threads deteriorate as they start to split or break. That has not happened in this case. If you collect carved Black Forest items, then you want this piece. It is one of a kind, most unusual, and in museum condition..
