Sweetpea Cottage has located a terrific old Norwegian tine that has all of its original features. This box still has much of its original lacing, tight and intact, the bent wood handle on the lid is still in place and it is properly pegged with the original wooden peg, the lid fits nice and tight, and the side posts are anchored with wooden pegs. Most old tines are either missing their lacing, handles, pegging, or the lids do not snap on. All aspects of this piece are as right as the day it was originally made. There are a couple of metal nails (very old repairs) that have been used to supplement the wooden pegs. The lid and bottom show the wonderful marks of hand planing, a reminder of hand-made construction. On the lid the initial “L K F” have been carved. The underside of the lid has two bands of thin iron that have been nailed across grain to reinforce the piece and look original to the piece. The reinforcing has clearly worked since the lid has not split at all, something that almost always occurs in larger tines. The box shows the wear that is consistent with age, yet manages to maintain the structural integrity that is desired from an old piece like this. Finally, it has a ivy vine design that has been painted around the sides and on the top. All of the design is protected under a very early coat of varnish which has served to prevent it from fading or rubbing off. Whoever made this piece clearly knew what he or she was doing as the walls are slightly over 1/8 inch thick, which is very difficult to bend.
The box is larger than most, measuring about 14 inches long and 8 3/4 inches wide. The lid is 15 inches long and 9 1/4 inches wide. The actual box is 5 1/4 inches tall with the end locking posts being 7 1/4 inches above table top. It has a terrific golden brown patina that only comes with years of handling. Both the inside and outside have a coat of varnish that has helped to enhance the richness of the piece. The lid still closes with a sharp “snap” as was originally intended. Look closely at the photos and enlarge them using the Ruby Lane enlargement function. You will see how terrific this box is. It is difficult to date the box, but given the construction methods, it will probably date around 1880.
