Sweetpea Cottage has located a terrific Swedish svepask,or tina, from the late 1800's to early 1900's. This box is beautifully made and well decorated. The lacing is tight, beautifully done, and the lid fits on well. The wooden peg that was used to attach one of the vertical stiles is missing, but it has not loosened the post at all. There is a lightly incised design on the box that has been paint decorated. Over time much of the paint has worn away or faded, but the remnants still make a nice statement. The dimensions are 8 inches from end to end, 3 7/8 inches wide and a total of 3 3/4 inches tall from the base to the top of the handle. The box without the lid is 2 ˝ inches tall. Construction is still tight with no signs of weakness anywhere. The underside of the handle has been reinforced with a single brad that appears to be fairly new.

Swedish writing runs around the rim of the lid, “Blott en van och icke fler, jag mitt hela hjerta ger” that roughly translates as “Only one friend and no more, the whole of my heart I give”. There is also some writing in old ink on the bottom of the box. Some of it is badly worn so it is not totally legible. What we are able to make out says “Till min kara mamma pa fodelsedagen frau.. ” which roughly translates as “To my dear mother on your birthday from...”. Inside of the box there are lots of stray colored marks. We suspect that a youngster might have used this box at one time to store crayons in. It does not detract from the svepask, but is part of its history. The outside the box has a light top coat of varnish that has left a wonderful satin sheen. We have photographed this box carefully in order to give you a good sense of the nature of the item. All in all, this is a marvelous addition to any collection of Scandinavian folk art.

This is a piece that you do not want to miss. You can buy with confidence from Sweetpea Cottage. We stand behind everything that we sell. We then ask that you return it to us in its original condition in a timely fashion. At that time we will refund the full purchase price minus any shipping charges.
