Elegant Dovetailed Handmade Doll Cradle, Late 19th C

Sweetpea Cottage is offering a fine miniature, or doll, cradle for you to add to your collection. This beautiful piece was carefully hand-made showing the fine workmanship of delicately cut dovetails. The piece comes from an estate in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and bears construction elements expected from a fine craftsman. The wood appears to be yellow pine judging by the grain patterns and its hardness. The dovetails are crisp, clean and beautifully executed. It has a varnish over cherry stain that has crackled slightly over the years to develop a beautiful finish. The finish looks completely original. There are 4 small finger-holds, one on each side. At the foot end of the cradle the board split off of the top at the finger-hole but was carefully reattached so that the split is hard to detect. A split runs about 1/3 of the way down the length of the inside bottom. This is a result of seasonal wood movement and has not weakened the piece in any way. The total length of the cradle is about 18 1/4 inches long, stands approximately 9 3/4 inches tall at the highest point, and is about 8 1/4 inches wide. The cheese cutter rockers stretch a total of 13 inches from side to side. The sides and base are made from 1/4 inch thick boards giving the piece a visual lightness, while the rockers are a stout 5/16th inches thick. Construction is a combination of dovetails with square-cut nails used to attach the base and the rockers. There are 2 brass screws, probably a more recent addition, inside the cradle that are used to strengthen a spine that runs along the length of the cradle underneath. This is an outstanding miniature that will accent any collection!
