Sweetpea Cottage has managed to obtain a very unusual item for the discriminating collector of Quimper. Over the years we have occasionally seen a Quimper set of cups with a Quimper made cask, or keg, for holding schnapps or brandy. Up until now, we have never seen a set with a hand made wooden cask. This set consists of 6 marvelous little Quimper cups, each 2 inches across and 1 3/8 inches tall, all with handles. They are all decorated with the marvelous designs and vibrant colors that have made Quimper so desirable and collectible. The cups hang from a wooden rack that is used to support a hand made, staved cask, or keg, that is fitted with a spigot and a bung. The cask is about 6 inches long and 4 ½ inches wide. We were told that these would have been used for holding fruit brandies or schnapps. You can be the judge as to whether that is true, or not. The cask is all carefully made from oak staves and held together with four copper bands attached with copper nails. There is a signature on the front copper band that is A. Robbs, or possibly A. Robbe. The condition of the set is excellent. The staves have loosened over time as the wood has dried out, but could become tight again if you choose to soak the inside of the barrel. Because of the shrinkage of the staves, the copper bands are also a little bit loose. The Quimper cups are quite good. One has a small crack that runs down into the cup, but has not jeopardized the integrity at all. Another cup has an extremely small crack that may actually be a result of firing in the kiln. There are a few small chips in the glaze around the rims of several cups. We can not emphasize strongly enough how fine this set is. After all these years, one would expect a cup to be broken or missing. Not true in this case.
