Sweetpea Cottage is offering this wonderful French Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil, fan box, or jewelry box, decorated with pewter laid over wood. Because of the softness of the pewter, objects like this are seldom found in respectable condition, and almost never found here in the U.S. in any condition. This one came directly to us from France. The floral design is done in a repousse, or embossed, technique and has colorful inset Czech glass cabochons or stones adding a touch of color, daintiness and charm to the piece. It measures 8 3/4 inches long, 3 inches wide and 3 1/4 inches tall. Its simplicity makes a wonderful artistic statement that will augment the decor in any Arts and Crafts setting. One of the special attributes of this box is that it still retains its original padded, tufted satin lining complete with braiding and Czech glass seed beads. The hinges are unusual in that they are attached with incredibly tiny screws. Most commonly, hinges on small boxes from this era where attached with very tiny push tacks instead of screws. The underside is not covered with pewter and shows the wood used for construction underneath the pewter covering. The condition of this box is excellent, with the wonderful patina that pewter develops over time. There are a few minor dings that this type of pewter work always has, but the wear is consistent with the age of the piece.
