For you collectors of miniature antique country furniture, Sweetpea Cottage has located a nice little gem. This kitchen cupboard, or stepback hutch, is made out of solid oak boards with the exception of the drawer backs and drawer bottoms which are constructed out of early plywood. It stands 15 inches tall, is a maximum of 5 ½ inches deep and 14 ½ inches long. The base component is 7 3/4 inches tall and the shelves add an additional 7 1/4 inches. There are two drawers in the base and two cupboards on either side of the drawers. The base and shelves are a single piece with the backing boards extending from the bottom to the top. There is a nice scalloped design along the bottom on both the front and two sides. The cupboard doors have decorative rosettes cut into them. The drawers and doors have original metal pulls. It is completely finished with shellac that has developed a subtle alligatored surface over the years. The general condition is very good with no weakness or breaks. There is one small chip of missing wood on the lower left front of the base and the one drawer front has a spot where something splash on the surface and dissolved a small bit of finish. None of these flaws are obvious. (See the photos) The general feel of the piece is quaint and quite decorative. For display by itself or with other miniatures, this well-priced antique will not disappoint you.
