Here is an opportunity to obtain a marvelous desk, or shelf, clock that was made in France during the 1920's. We believe that the clock movement and the clock case are a marriage. Most likely the clock movement had its start in some other sort of case, probably as a nightstand clock. Somewhere along the line, somebody decided to put it into a different case. The movement is stated as made in France and has a winding mechanism. It was never intended to strike. The face is porcelain with just a faint crack running from about 11:55 to 9:00. It has not weakened the face or impacted on the integrity of the face at all. The case is made out of solid oak that has been stained dark, similar to a dark Mission stain. It has then be top coated with shellac. Dentil molding runs around the front and both sides. There is a casement pediment on top of the dentil molding, providing a somewhat Gothic feel to the piece. There is some damage on the upper right side where a piece of molding is missing underneath the dentil molding. In addition, the casement molding at the top on the right side has been reglued. One of the photos shows the damaged area revealing how subtle the damage is. The clock stands 9 inches tall, is 5 3/4 inches wide and 3 inches deep. There is no back on the case and it probably never had one. The body of the clockworks extends beyond the back of the case. The clock mechanism also slides out of the case and the previous owner friction fit the mechanism into the case by a single wrap of some sort of fabric tape around the brass case. Although somewhat erratic, the clock runs for about 30 hours, which is standard for a clock that was intended to be wound every night before going to bed. It has a firm and satisfying tick, as was usually the case with early windup clocks. This is an item you will be very pleased with as it will add a touch of interest and elegance to your decor.
