Sweetpea Cottage is selling a Regional Navajo Rug that dates from the 1930's. The colors are black, white, and red with a grayish brown background. The red is bright and vibrant aniline dye. The other colors are all natural. The design is very bold with red and white diamonds running up the middle. Half diamonds run along the edges and lightening bolts edge the central diamond pattern. Overall, this rug is in good shape. The dimensions are about 37 inches by 65 inches, although there is some minor variation as the edges are not perfectly straight. It is very heavy and tightly woven. There are the common color variations in the gray areas of the background due to the blending of different wools, along with the usual lazy lines. There are no signs that this was ever a floor rug in that the colors are bright and crisp on both sides. There is no indication of any thinning as would be expected from floor wear. A number of pulls exist along with some yarn breaks. None of this damage is out of keeping with a hand woven rug of this age. There are also several small spots showing at different locations, none of them being particularly noticeable but they are mentioned for full disclosure. There is some very faint bleeding of the red into the white diamonds. It is very limited and is not a distraction. It could be removed by a professional if you choose. The corners have the usually loss of tassels. We have not cleaned this rug, nor do we feel that it needs to be cleaned.
