Collectors of early Norwegian or Scandinavian antiques will love this box. This is what you would expect to see at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum given its unique quality and character. It is, no doubt, a one of a kind item that collectors do not think they will ever have a chance to own. We obtained it directly from Norway. It is made from fir, and has diamond openings on all sides where the wood has been cut out and replaced with carved open grids inserted into the wood. The whole box is held together with wooden pegs along with nails that were added to strengthen the box at a later date. The swirling grain painting gives the box a wonderful feel and patina. It was clearly made by a master craftsman. Inside there are two storage areas. To get to them one end lifts up in a sliding dovetail and then a drawer is revealed that can be pulled out. In addition, the top slides off like a candle box revealing a second storage area. Overall, the condition is good, although it has damage and wear that is consistent with its age. The lid has two metal brackets screwed in place that hold a crack together, there is some loss to several grids, a number of drying cracks, and some early insect damage. Some glue repairs appear to be recent. This piece dates from the mid 1800s and it would be a great addition to any collection of Norwegian farm antiques. It measures 15 inches long, 10 inches tall, and 7 1/4 inches wide.
