Since Sweetpea Cottage sells many Scandinavian antiques, we thought it would be appropriate to offer this beautiful book about Norway. Titled “Norway in June”, it was written by Olivia M .Stone and published in London in 1882. The cover and spine have some wonderful gilt art-work on them and overall the book is in good condition. There are 448 pages along with 39 illustrations. There are the usual bumps and bruises that one would expect with a book of this age and the pages have some darkening from the acid paper that was used in the printing process. In addition a book plate was very poorly removed from the front cover leaving some damage. There are some signs of the binding starting to separate at different spots in the book, but overall the book is quite sound. While it might be called a travelogue it is primarily Olivia M. Stone’s description of a lengthy visit to Norway. In addition, there is information that is intended to help the future traveler, telling the reader what to take on their visit to Norway. We have found it to be delightful to read and a real glimpse into the English psyche and attitude about the World during the late 1800's. We have only been able to locate two copies of this book on the internet, both sold in Norway, and both quite expensive. So, it is obviously quite rare.
