Sweetpea Cottage is offering this marvelous miniature travel clock that dates from the first quarter of the last century. If you were a lady or gentleman of refinement, this is what you would have taken with you as you made the grand tour of Europe.

This small Swiss clock sits on its own stand and comes with a leather cathedral style case that has latched doors. Faux mother of pearl surrounds the dial and covers the top of the base. The metalwork on the clock is brass and stamped in designs typical of pocket watches from the same period. The face of the clock which appears somewhat dark in the photos is actually simulated machined metalwork as was common during the 1910's -1920's. It is marked Swiss on the face and has the stamp “Metal Dore 93017 Fab Suisse Lancel Swiss Made” on the underside of the base with the word “Brevet” enclosed in a cross. The clock does not run but evidence indicates that when it does work the small pendulum visible in the window within the bottom of the front goes back and forth. The clock stands a total of 2 3/8 inches tall, is 1 ˝ inches wide and 1 1/4 inches deep.

The leather cathedral style case has two hinged doors that open to reveal the clock which can easily be removed for use and winding. On the back the case is stamped Made in France. The leather has darken over time and has scuffs that are consistent with age and use. The clasp on the doors works well and easily closes the doors keeping the clock inside. The lining of the case is silk fabric that has worn through to the leather lining in many places and has darkened from contact with the metal case of the clock. The case sits on a base that is 1 5/8 by 2 inches and stands 2 7/8 inches tall. For the collector of clocks, miniatures, or the unusual item, this is a very special antique and would be quite difficult to find anywhere else.
