Sweetpea Cottage has this wonderful 19th century mahogany hanging candle box with a sliding lid ready for you to use. The total length of the piece is 22 ½ inches long with the box being 15 3/4 inches long. It is 6 inches wide and stands 4 1/8 inches away from the wall. The corners are mitered dovetails, a tricky joint to master for any cabinet maker. There are some dimples where small square brads were used to snug up the dovetails, done probably at the time that the box was made. The lid rides smoothly in the grooves and has a slight raised panel design. The back is a single mahogany board that is attached with square nails. Nicely profiled molding runs around the top including a mitered piece of molding that is attached to the sliding lid. The box is topped with a nicely proportioned lolly-pop handle that is used for hanging on the wall. The condition is quite good. The construction is still solid and the dark varnished surface is mostly present with some small amount of alligatoring appearing in spots. Beyond that the piece has the nicks, scratches, and wear marks of an antique that has been lovingly used and cared for over the years.
