Sweetpea Cottage has managed to locate the ultimate tina or tine for your collection. This magnificent item is unique because of its large size, but it is even more unique because of the grain-painted surface. If you collect Norwegian or Swedish folk art, tinas, tines, or svepasker, then you do not want to pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It measures 20 inches long, 14 inches wide, and has a total height of 12 ½ inches. The height of the box portion alone is 10 ½ inches. The inside is painted dark green, but this was done years after it had already been around awhile. There are signs of old insect holes visible on the inside, but the green paint is down inside of the holes. So the paint was added after that. There are no signs of any recent insect activity. The traditional tina usually has one set of laces, but this one has lacing on both sides. Two separate pieces of wood were steam bent to form half of the tina and then the two halves were laced together. The top is keyed so that it will only fit on one way. At one end the vertical stile is topped with a small cross. This matches a cross that was also incised into the top. In order to put the lid on properly, the two crosses must be matched up. In addition to the paint on the inside, there is a little damage. There is a split in the side that runs around one end of the box for a distance of 8 inches. The maker of the box did not allow for expansion and contraction of the wood and it eventually caused the split. The split does not impact on the integrity of the box at all. Also, around the base, there is one section where expansion of the side has pulled the box away from the base. There are signs of an early repair to this problem, but the separation is still visible. The outside is grain painted on all surfaces except the bottom. It is chocolate brown with spots of darker color that emulates stained birdseye maple. It is a terrific paint job that makes this tine stand out from all others. There is some minimal loss of the grain-painted surface as is consistent with the age of the piece. The loss of paint does not impact on the overall look of the piece.
We have been collecting and dealing with old Scandinavian boxes for years, but have never encountered a box such as this. It is truly unique and impressive in its quality.
