Sweetpea Cottage has obtained a wonderful hand hammered Jugendstil ostrich cigar cutter, made by Hugo Berger (Working as Goberg) in Germany during the early 1900's. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. This cigar cutter is shaped like an ostrich and constructed so that when the head is lowered it acts as a cutter to clip the end off of a cigar. It stands a total of 7 inches tall when the head is extended up while the height to the top of the body is 6 1/4 inches. The base is 4 7/8 by 4 ˝ inches. The piece is in excellent condition with no damage. It has the desired hammer marks that bear the small dings and imperfections that come with a piece of work that has been hammered with punches on a piece of cold steel. The cutter works smoothly and could still be used, if you wish. A patina that appears to be original to the construction covers the whole piece. It has been well treated over the years. Occasionally it is possible to run into Goberg’s owl motif, but we have never seen any Goberg items that contain ostriches. On the underside of the base the piece bears the stamp “Goberg Ges.Gesch.” which leaves not doubt as to the origin of the item. This will add a marvelous touch to a collection of cigar cutters sitting on a desk or shelf, or it would be an unusual addition to a Goberg collection or Jugendstil / Arts and Crafts collection. A unique Goberg piece like this always demands a premium price if you can find one to buy!

In the graphic style of Jugendstil/Arts and Crafts, this is a fantastic and rare item. Sitting on a desk or shelf, it will capture everybody’s attention. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED. If you wish to return your purchase for any reason we gladly refund your purchase price minus shipping.
