We have managed to obtain a terrific old solid wood medicine cabinet that has German origins. The cabinet stands a total of 17 inches tall from the bottom to the top of the pediment. The case alone is about 13 ˝ inches tall. It is 11 inches wide and 6 inches deep. The cabinet has been constructed from a mixture of woods all of which have been heavily stained to produce the dark color that is usually referred to as European walnut. The wood is top-coated with what appears to be a paste wax. The previous owner cleaned the piece including the brass decorations on the door and the working lock on the side. The door is carefully carved with a grooved design that supplements the brass work. Above the cabinet a carved pediment stands over the piece with the word “Apotheke” carved into the wood. Inside of the cabinet there is a single fixed shelf and a bank of drawers, 2 over 1. The cabinet has four bun feet which would allow you place the piece on any surface. There are also two metal screw loops attached on the top, a recent addition, which would allow you to hang this cabinet on a wall. The lock still works well and is unusual in that it is on the side rather than on the door. It does a nice job of keeping the door closed..

If you are looking for primitives, then this piece is not for you. It is a refined piece of cabinetry that was carefully constructed, has been carried for over the years, and makes a statement of elegance in any room. It would go nicely with just about any decor.
