Sweetpea Cottage has managed to obtain this terrific French hand-carved walnut humidor that dates from about 1880. Every once in a while we run into a truly outstanding antique and this is such an item. This is a one-of-a-kind piece that was handmade when quality craftsmanship was everything. It measures 11 inches by 8 3/4 inches at the widest points on the base. The total height to the top of the carving on the lid is about 7 ½ inches. There are 5 grooved shelves inside, each of which pulls out like a drawer and is capable of holding 10 cigars. The box is beautifully carved with a floral motif on the top and a geometric diamond design cut into the sides. The box is designed in what is often referred to as Renaissance style. The surface is in beautiful condition bearing the rich patina of the French walnut and the beeswax finish that has protected it so well over the years. The condition is wonderful with very little indication of wear or abuse. There is a slight warp to the lid that is common with flatsawn boards as they age. The lock and key works well and the warp on the lid does not prevent the box from closing properly. All hardware is original. There is no odor of cigars inside. This would make a terrific statement sitting on a large desk or shelf. Because of their one-of-a-kind nature, pieces like this are becoming more and more difficult to obtain. We have not had one for many years.
