Sweetpea Cottage is offering a most unusual item, the rarest of the rare. This lidded stein is designed as a frog seated in marsh grasses. The head of the frog is the lid and it is attached to the handle with a pewter hinge. According to the Beer Stein Book by Gary Kirsner, it was probably made about 1900 in Germany by Matthias Girmscheid.

It stands about 5 7/8 inches tall and is about 5 inches wide, at the widest point from the front side of the stein to the back side of the handle. The base averages about 3 7/8 inches around. It is in nice condition, but could use a little bit of cleaning. The lid is tightly attached to the pewter hinge and the hinge is not sprung, as so often happens. There are several small spots where some of the green color has come off and the under glaze is showing through. These spots are not chips, but are more like scratches. The photos show them. Other than that, there are no chips, cracks or other signs of damage.

There is no sign of a manufacturer other than the number “849" and “Germany” both deeply impressed into the bottom. Be sure to check out the photos carefully. They are an accurate representation of the piece. This is a very unusual item and there can not be many of these around, especially in this condition.
