Sweetpea Cottage has obtained a very special piece of folk art. We are offering you a chance to own a one-of-a-kind wine cup, or wine bowl, that is European in origin. It is crowned with a wonderfully carved set of polychrome painted figures, male and female, that could best be described as in a “conjugal embrace” standing next to a fir tree. The actual cup is constructed from a hollowed out piece of wood. The base of the cup was soaked in water to soften it for expansion and then a round chamfered wooden bottom was inserted. Once the piece dried, the bottom tightened creating a snug fit. The handle was carved from a piece of wood and then attached to the body of the bowl with a brass band that extends completely around the cup and through a slit in the handle. There is a phrase carved into the handle that we have been unable to translate. Based on limited research on the internet, it appears to be Eastern European, possibly in the Czech region. The phrase is “Cisom sklamal nesklamal len sisom ta sem dostal.” If you know what it says, then please let us know.

The total length of the piece is about 7 5/8 inches long while the cup is approximately 4 inches around. From the base to the highest point it stands 7 inches tall. We can not venture a guess as to the type of wood used, but it appears that there is a mixture of woods between the cup, cup bottom, and handle. The figures are lightly painted adding a touch of color to their traditional style of clothing. Finally, with the exception of the inside of the cup, the piece is coated with a layer of varnish. Condition is excellent throughout the piece. It is quite sound with no signs of any damage. Overall, this is a truly outstanding piece of folk art that would be spectacular on a desk or shelf, in a place of prominent display.
