Sweetpea Cottage is pleased to offer this marvelous chip-carved box to you. Although it is constructed in the manner of a candle box, given its shape it is unlikely that it was ever used for that purpose. Most likely is was originally intended to be a dresser box or desk box for a refined gentleman. The chip carved patterns differ on all four side and are reminiscent of those commonly found on early Scandinavian, Norwegian, or Swedish boxes. It dates from the last quarter of the 19th century. It would be a terrific gift for the collector on your shopping list.

This is the epitome of chip carving. Each side and the top have all been carved with different designs. The box is made out of softwood. It measures 6 inches wide, 6.5 inches long, and 4.75 inches tall. Construction is simple, with no fancy joinery used to put it together. The corners are joined using dadoed butt joints and then nailed with small brads. The top slides freely in grooves cut into the sides. There is some damage to the lid with a piece of wood approximately 1 inch long that has split off one of the corners on the underside of the lid. Because of its location it hardly shows when the box is closed. As is typical of sliding lid boxes, part of the wooden lip that the sliding lid rides on is missing on one side. Consequently, the lid does not close tightly. There is also a small split on one side near the top. A previous owner of this box tried to glue the split back together, apparently with some success, as the split is now tight. There are a few very small dots of paint splatter, primarily on the lid. A very old shellac finish is on all surfaces except for the bottom. Some of the finish has worn off at spots, revealing the lighter color of the wood underneath. See the photos for a better look at the overall condition of the box.
