Sweetpea Cottage has obtained a Scandinavian Mangle Board, also known as a smoothing board. This beautifully carved piece is a testament to the maker’s skills. These were usually made by a man as a gift to his betrothed and are expressions of beauty and love. This one is no exception. They were to be used for smoothing linens and bedding.

Hand made out of birch it has a marvelous patina only possible as a result of years of contact with gentle loving hands. There is a standing horse form handle that was skillfully set into the board using a sliding dovetail joint. Running down the length of the board is a bold scrolled leaf design that is elegant in its simplicity. At the top end by the horse a small leather strap for hanging has been nailed to the back. The total length of the board is 29 5/8 inches and the maximum width is 5 1/8 inches. The horse stands 4 3/8 inches tall from the surface of the board and is 10 1/4 inches from nose to tail. The condition is excellent. There are the usual small cracks from drying that are common in such an old piece of wood. The color is a rich golden brown. Judging by the design it is most likely Norwegian or Swedish, and probably dates from the first quarter of the 19th century. This wonderful smoothing board could be the capstone piece in your collection of wooden folk art.
