19th C. Carved, Paint Decorated Black Forest Letter Opener w/Chamois Horn

Sweetpea Cottage is offering a wonderful piece of Black Forest art, a delightful souvenir item labeled as being from Grindelwald (See closeup photo). The piece is a maximum of 10 inches long and 1 inch wide at its widest point. The blade of the letter opener is 5 1/8 inches long with the handle 4 7/8 inches long. A chamois horn that is 1 3/4 inches long sits on the end of the handle. Carved into the wooden part of the handle is a traditional Black Forest design of leaves and berries. On the blade there is a hand painted Alpine scene consisting of a chalet and mountains. The back of the blade is unadorned with the exception of the word Grindelwald carefully painted on it. The opener is in good condition with the normal wear expected with age and use. The painting on the blade has some chipping and sections missing (See closeup photo). The missing paint does not significantly reduce the quality of the work. Shellac has been used to topcoat the whole piece, with the exception of the chamois horn. Overall, this is a very unusual item, unlike most of the Black Forest items that are usually seen for sale.
