Sweetpea Cottage is offering this unusual, handmade box. Constructed out of birch bark and leather, it probably has its origins in Maine, the Adirondacks, or possibly Minnesota. It is typical of the birch bark crafts of the early 1900's that came out of Maine. It is not exactly clear what the purpose of the box is, but it looks as if it could have been used for holding dry flies or some such other related types of fishing tackle. It measures 4 ½ inches tall, 4 inches wide, and 2 1/4 inches deep. It is constructed of multiple layers of birchbark bent in the shape of a box, much like a cigarette pack.. The base is birch bark on the outside and inside, but there are signs of a piece of wood sandwiched in-between for reinforcing the base. The lid is also bent birch bark. Vertical strips of decorative bark run up the length of the box. Each strip of bark is attached to the box with copper tacks that have been clinched on the inside, much in the style of the tacks used to hold Shaker boxes together. Some leather banding runs around the outside rim of the fold-down flap that closes the box and the lid is hinged with a piece of leather. Two small staples were added as a later addition to reinforce the leather on the front. There is a latch on the front of the box that is supposed to close it like a purse, but it is missing a piece of wood which could slip into the latch to keep it closed. There is also a leather strap on the back that was intended for attaching to a belt or strap. This is a very unusual item. Many people are familiar with small round or oval boxes made from birch bark, but this is the only box of this sort that we have ever seen. The condition is remarkably good and the wear is consistent with its age. This piece is a real beauty that would add much to your collection of Northwoods memorabilia.
